Dan is originally from the Isle of Man, and graduated from the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester in 2013. Dan has had music in his life from a young age and always enjoyed performing to others in local music contests as a soloist and chamber musician before moving to Manchester in 2009.
During his studies at the RNCM, Dan was successful in gaining places on various professional access schemes including the Hallé Access Scheme, London Symphony Orchestra brass academy and Mahler Chamber Orchestra Academy. Dan is well versed in musical theatre, with a wealth of experience playing in shows such as Anything Goes, 9-5: The Musical, Legally Blonde, Hairspray, Chorus Line, Shrek: The Musical, and West Side Story to name but a few. Dan listens to a lot of music, but thoroughly enjoys soul, funk, jazz and rock.
Dan is currently an extra musician with the Hallé Orchestra and BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, and through his studies at the RNCM, Dan has experienced tuition from a vast wealth of teachers and professors from around the world including Adrian Morris (Hallé Orchestra), Simon Cowen (RLPO), Kristian Steenstrup, Jiggs Whigham, Dennis Rollins, Mark Hampson (Mahler Chamber Orchesta/Orquesta Filarmonica de Gran Canaria), Andreas Klein (DSO Berlin) and Chris Houlding.
Since completing the Advanced Jazz Improvisation elective at the RNCM under Mike Hall’s expert tuition, Dan decided to focus on the medium of jazz. Dan has had several experiences playing in big bands and pit orchestras up and down the UK, and has worked with the SK2 Jazz Orchestra (formerly Shades of Kenton Big Band), Beats and Pieces Big Band, and the Manchester Jazz Collective. Dan was also successful in gaining a place on Brighter Sound’s FUNK Foundation led by the legendary Pee Wee Ellis and Gary Winters, and has since developed a Funk addiction! He was also successful in gaining a place on Brighter Sound’s Jazz Director’s Series led by pianist and composer Zoe Rahman. Dan is a full-time member of afro-rock-funk spectacular Agbeko who play around the world on a regular basis at festivals, music halls and even mountaintops!
